Caption: Extrathyroid carcinoma. Extrathyroid carcinomas are usually larger and grow more rapidly than the other subtypes of papillary carcinomas. They are more common in older patients and are found, at operation, to have penetrated the thyroid capsule and to have infiltrated adjacent tissues, including the strap-muscles.
